República Dominicana foi marcada por uma agressiva política intervencionista dos Estados Unidos. Em 1930, Rafael Leônidas Trujillo, chefe do exército, após a deposição de Vásquez, foi eleito presidente. Trujillo criou um aparato militar de perseguição e repressão a todos os opositores do regime. A deterioração das condições de vida dos dominicanos levou à reorganização dos sindicatos a partir de 1940. Nesse contexto, foram criados o Partido Socialista Popular e a Juventude Democrática, ambos de filiação marxista. A economia entrou em declínio na década de 1950, um período de empobrecimento da população. Em 14 de junho de 1959, Cuba apoiou uma expedição armada contra Trujillo. Apesar do fracasso, impulsionou a criação do Movimento Revolucionário 14 de julho. Seus integrantes foram brutalmente assassinados pela ditadura de Trujillo. Em 1960 Trujillo perdeu o apoio dos Estados Unidos e no ano seguinte foi assassinado. A luta pelo poder em meio culminou em uma guerra civil e posterior instauração do governo de Balaguer, de 1966 a 1978. O regime de Balaguer se caracterizou por forte repressão política. Em 1978 Balaguer, após pressão internacional, convocou eleições presidenciais, é derrotado, dando fim a um governo de doze anos. (JINKINGS,2006)
